Our Last Day!

'Tis the last day of Grade 6 2017!  I just can't believe it!

Thanks so much for the generous gifts...I mean this when I say that our children are truly enough!

Tomorrow is our last day together for 2017!

Tomorrow we are having a fun day here at Christ the King!  Students are to hand in their reader response on the main idea and their Christmas Essays.  We have a dance planned in the afternoon and a trip to the library in the morning.

Bowling Trip
Due to the cancellation of busses yesterday, bowling has been rescheduled to Thursday, December 21st from 9:30 am -11:30 am.

Concert
Our concert is set for next Wed at 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm.  Please ensure the students are at the school by 6:15 pm.  I encourage them to bring an activity to keep them engaged while they are waiting to perform.  Please send their costumes to school for Monday!

Christmas Concert, Writer's Workshop, Field Trips oh my!

Christmas Concert
Our show is on Wed the 20th at 1:30 and 6:30!  We can't wait!  Below is a list of costume pieces for each role:

Mary:  blue scarf and white robe
Joseph:  robe

3 Wisemen:  Robes (or sheets gather red around them), a crown (I can make this for them), one wrapped present each.

Shepherds:  robe

Sheep:  All black.  Two pairs of white tube socks

Angels:  Robe/white dress, wings and halo (I can make the halo if needed)

The students are working on an essay about Christmas.  They were given four possible topics.  All three main body paragraphs must be written for Monday.  Below is an outline given to the students and a graphic organizer to help them.

Sequence Mani Body Paragraph 1:  How Santa Prepares for Christmas TS  There are many different things Santa needs to prepare before the big day. Beef up Make the naughty and nice list Meet with the elves Transition Sentence:  Although Santa is the main character in the story of present delivery, Mrs. Claus has many responsibilities for Christmas Day as well.

Cause and Effect Explain what would happen if at Christmas time we always put others before ourselves and remembered the real meaning of Christmas. TS:  Donate to charity is important year round but it is especially important at Christmas because it is like giving a gift to Jesus. Salvation Army Can Drive Coats for Kids Transition S:  Donating to charity is a great way to remember the reason for the season, and another way to do this is by going to church.

Problem and Solution:  The elves feel undervalued and are in a labour dispute TS:  The labour dispute between Santa and the elves can not continue or Christmas will be ruined, so giving the elves a raise is one solution to the problem! Representative from elves meets with Santa A living wage is determined Over time is negotiated Transition S:  Providing a living wage is important to the elves but health benefits are even more important.

Compare and Contrast:  Comparing your Christmas to Christmas of your parents’ childhood TS:  Getting your Christmas Tree is one of the most fun parts in preparing for Christmas, and it’s interesting to compare my tradition in doing this to my parents. Writer’s Workshop December: The Expository Essay

Choose one organizational pattern to focus on, and write an essay following one of these patterns.  Refer to your notes as you are drafting your piece to ensure that you are including all of the necessary elements to the organizational pattern you are following.  

Choose one of the assignments below:

Option 1:  Sequence

Prompt:  Describe how Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the elves prepare for the Big Day at the North Pole, December 25th

Option 2:  Problem/Solution

Prompt:  The elves are angry with Santa, and feel that they are undervalued and mistreated.  Explain how Santa and the elves could come to an agreement and start working again .

Option 3:  Cause and Effect

Prompt:  So often we forget what Christmas is really about.  Explain what would happen if at Christmas time we always put others before ourselves and remembered the real meaning of Christmas.

Option 4:  Compare/Contrast

Compare the way Christmas was celebrated when your mom or dad were a kid vs the way you celebrate Christmas today.

Must be a 5 paragraph essay.   

This must be double spaced, size 12/14 font, and you must include a cover page.

Write your thesis statement.  This is a sentence that names the three main subtopics of the main body of the essay that you will be analyzing and explaining.

Homework, VIP Police Visit, Can Drive

The Grade 6 students had a visit today from their VIP officers, Constable Saunders and Constable Kousak.  They brought in some members of the drug squad to teach our grade 6s about what drugs are and how to recognize them, and why to stay away from them.

We went to see the play "Once on This Island" at Holy Names High School today, and our very own co-op student Charlotte Davidson was one of the leads!  A former Comet, Sally Vu was also dancing in the chorus.  Great work Knights!

Bring in your cans and dry goods for the can drive!  Let's help out where we can!

What's Happening in 6R?

We are starting December with a bang!  We have been working hard the entire month of November and will continue to do so in December, but with a holiday theme throughout!

Math:  We will be working on different concepts in the strand of measurement.  Our learning goals for the month are stated below.  Our culminating activity will be creating and measuring our own versions of Santa's Workshop!  We are continuing with number talks and using math starters (which are little math activities) to begin our math periods.  If you'd like to know more about number talks and math starters, ask your kids to play with you, or lead a number talk with you.  They would love that!

Literacy:  We are currently exploring organizational patterns (problem/solution, cause and effect, sequence and compare/contrast) in writing and identifying the main idea in Reading. 
Students will be writing an essay with a Christmas theme and will be reading various non-fiction articles from the "Newsela"website.  All articles have been chosen and saved already and geared to the sixth grade level.  I will add more articles throughout the month.

Religion:  We have finished exploring the story of Moses and are creating our own modern day commandments.  We will be discussing the story of the nativity as well.

Health:  We have a student teacher, Ms. Stafford, that has been coming in to teach the students various lessons based on the sixth grade health curriculum.  She has explored the concepts of media and body image, making healthy food choices, mindfulness and meditation, and how to approach having difficult discussion with others.

Social Studies:  Mr St. Louis is exploring some geography concepts with the students.

Phys-Ed:  We are wrapping up our unit on Volleyball and will conclude December with some more fitness activities.

Christmas Concert:  We are currently working on our act for the Christmas Concert.  Your kids are absolutely hilarious!  I am so lucky to be teaching them this year!  In this act you will find some singing, some dancing, some story-telling, some angels, shepherds, wisemen, and even some rockin' sheep!  See you on December 20th!

 Below are photos taken during volleyball play-offs.  What an exciting time!  We had members of the High School Volleyball team come out to help with net minding and lines, and we even had a pep talk from the Principal!  Great season ladies!  We are proud of you!  Many thanks to our referee Mr. St. Louis!  What a pro!  Great job scorekeepers Anthony and Rino!
