What's Happening This Week?

This is the last week before March Break! Let's finish strong grade 6!

Language: We will be working on a 4 part Literature Circle Assignment which can be found on google classroom. I will post a new part each day. Please ask your child about the expectations of this assignment and they can show you if they log on to google classroom.

Math: We will be exploring constructing, measuring and classifying angles, along with sorting and analyzing various polygons this week.

Science: We will be wrapping up our Science Unit this week, ending with "The Great Debate" and a paper airplane challenge!

Religion: We will continue preparing the Stations of the Cross presentation with the grade 8s and our Family Life Background Presentations.

Math: Measurement Test have been sent home for signatures. Below are the Learning Goals for our next Unit Geometry!

UNIT 9:  Angles, Polygons and 3D Models

	LEARNING GOALS	SUCCESS CRITERIA
	I can measure and construct angles up to 180o using a protractor.
	I can classify angles as acute, right, obtuse, or straight.
	I can construct polygons using a variety of tools, given angle and side measurements.
	I can sort and classify quadrilaterals by geometric properties related to symmetry, angles and sides.
	I can sort polygons according to the number of lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry.
	I can build 3D models using connecting cubes, given isometric sketches or the top, side, and front views of the structure.
	I can sketch, using a variety of tools, isometric perspective and the top, side and front views of 3D figures made with interlocking cubes.

Prepare debate arguments for Monday

Below are our groups preparing for the Great Debate!

The Great Debate:  Yes or No to the Aircraft?

With your small group you will debate the following issue:

“Do the benefits out-weight the costs of the aircraft?”

Each group will represent a different point of view:

Farmers, Airline workers, Doctors, environmentalists, and Tour Operators.

You must consider the following factors:

Society as a whole, the environment, the economy

With your group you will present your arguments for or against aviation.  You are permitted 5 minutes to present your arguments, so be clear, concise, and easy to understand.  Your goal is to convince your audience to be on your side, or change sides for that matter.

Each group will be given two minutes to rebutt arguments that “put holes” in their arguments.

After the rebuttlas, Each group will have a chance to make a closing argument.

1. Each group presents their stance
2. Each group has a chance to rebutt
3. Each group has a chance to defend
4. Closing statements are made

You are expected to come to the debate in role.  This means dressed and acting like the group you represent.

Success Criteria:

• Give an opening statement explaining which group you represent and your point of view.
• Give at least three simple arguments (concrete reasons) to back up your point of view
• Choose one to three representatives to speak.
• Speak in an orderly fashion clearly, with a strong voice and good volume level.
• Do not interrupt others, wait your turn and be respectful.
• Rebuttal is strong and makes sense
• Closing arguments is clear and effective
• No silliness

Currciulum Expectation:

1.1  assess the benefits and costs of aviation technology for society and the environment, taking different social and economic perspectives into account (e.g., the perspectives of farmers, airline workers, doctors, home owners, tour operators)

Sample issues: (a) Crop dusting from planes allows the chemicals to spread quickly over large crop areas, which is critical to pest control and crop protection. However, the planes cannot direct the chemicals onto the target crop with precision, so the chemicals spread where they are not wanted.

(b) The speed and ease of air travel allow quick transportation of organs for lifesaving transplants, quick transportation of injured patients to hospitals, and trips for business and pleasure. However, air travel also increases the risk of spreading infectious diseases and creates noise and air pollution.

Homework and Math

Today we built rectangular and triangular prisms.  The goal was to build one that would hold popsicle sticks.  Students were asked to calculate the volume, capacity and the total mass the container could hold in two different units.  Here are some photos of the work in progress:

What's Happening in 6R?

Math:
We are wrapping up our unit on measurement!  Key concepts that were examined are surface area, volume, conversion of cubed units, units of mass and units of capacity.  We will be having our unit test on Thursday.  Students are encouraged to study their learning goals sheets and notes, and practice multi-step problems at home.

English:
We are wrapping up out literature circles this week.  We will be concentrating on a major assignment based on these books for the next few weeks.  This will involve creating a plot summary, character analysis, definition of literary devices, among other things.  Please ask your children about their progress on this project.  We will begin next Monday.

Science:
We have about a week, week and a half left on air and flight.  Students will be working on a flight poster or personal writing piece over the next few days.  This is posted in google classroom.

Religion:
We are wrapping up a unit on family history and have created posters using the "makey-makey."  Ask your kids about this.  They are coding their voices!  It is so cool!
We will begin preparing the Stations of the Cross presentation for the school this week.  The date for this is March 22.  If you'd like to come watch your child, please feel free. I am not sure on the time of this even yet.

Phys-Ed:
We continue with the beep test, aerobic activity, and sharpening basketball skills.  We will begin a new health unit in March.

Arts:
We will be spending some serious time on drama with our Lenten presentation but will continue to dabble in studying various artists' techniques.

Today

We had such a fun day today!  Our whole school celebrated the Olympics today with opening ceremonies, all day activities and closing ceremonies as well.  Our very own Ava Patey sang the national anthem, and we participated in many Olympic events!
