Curriculum Update

Math:  We are presently working on a unit on data management.  Below are our learning goals for the unit:

Data Management

	I can collect data by conducting a survey or an experiment and record observations or measurements.
	I can collect and organize discrete primary data and secondary data and display in tables and graphs.
	I can collect and organize continuous primary data and secondary data and display in tables and graphs.
	I can choose an appropriate type of graph (pictographs, horizontal or vertical bar graph, double bar graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, broken-line graphs, continuous line graphs) to represent a set of data, graph the data using technology, and justify my choice.
	I can determine how well a set of data represents a population based on how the data was collected.
	I can interpret and draw conclusions from primary and secondary data presented in charts, tables and graphs.
	I can compare different graphical representations of the same data.
	I can explain how different scales used on graphs can influence conclusions drawn from the data.
	I can demonstrate an understanding of mean and use it to compare two sets of data, with and without the use of technology.
	I can demonstrate an understanding of how data from charts, tables and graphs can be used to make inferences and convincing arguments.

Literacy:  We are working on writing poems and incorporating vivid imagery and literary devices throughout.  We will begin reading a series of non-fiction articles soon using the website "newsela" to identify characteristics of non-fiction texts.

Religion:  The students are presenting the story of Moses through drama tomorrow!

Phys-Ed:  We are learning the skills and drills of volleyball

Health:  We are learning about making healthy choices for a healthy lifestyle and the media and body image.

Arts:  We will be focusing on drama and dance in order to prepare for the upcoming Christmas Concert!

Number Talks

NUMBER TALKS

I attended a workshop today about "number talks."  I have never heard of this concept before but after learning about it today, I think it's a great way to build mental math strategies with the students.  Below is the text that the Boards is using to help initiate this Math strategy.  You can youtube number talks to get an idea of what it is.  I did not include a specific link because there were no examples done by Sherry Parrish herself but there are examples of other teachers facilitating number talks in their classrooms.
