VIP Field Trip

 

We went on a field trip today to Windsor Police Headquarters and the Ontario Provincial Court.  We were lucky enough to meet the ESU or TACK Team (known as the SWAT team in USA), see a police cruiser, meet the 911 dispatch team, and meet an actual judge, Judge Dean.  We spoke to police officers and prosecutors, and really got a deeper understanding for the police and what they do.
Our VIP officers even bought all of the kids pizza and a drink.

We are so lucky to have such great community helpers!

Field Trip on Friday!

What an Action Packed Day!

Today we had a special visit from Stephanie Seguin, the founder of the "Chasing Hazel" foundation.  She came in to talk to the Grade 6s about her daughter Hazel, who has down syndrome, and about Down Syndrome in general.  She was a very passionate and powerful speaker, who left a strong message with the students:  See the abilities in everyone, treat everyone with kindness, and end the "r" word.  

After recess we headed out to pick up garbage in our community, accumulate steps on our pedometers, and get some fresh air!  We met up with a lady walking her dog and she complimented us for beautifying our neighborhood.  In honour of Earth Month it is so important to do what we can to clean up our planet!

We then listened to a presentation from the  Jump Rope for Heart organization and heard all about kids who suffer with heart defects and stroke.  An envelope went home today!

Today and Homework

Today we participated in Yoga!  It was awesome!  So much fun.  The kids were so respectful and fully participated.  The instructor said this was the best behaved and most receptive student group.

Tomorrow we will have our dramatic readings of our poetry.

Picture Day is Friday and we are wearing yellow for cancer awareness on Thursday

Inferencing Unit Wrap-Up

On Friday we wrapped up our Inferencing Unit with a final activity called "Who Done It." 

Unbeknownst to the students I set up a crime scene in the classroom during lunch.  The classroom door and hallway was covered in caution tape and there was a crime scene roped off with caution tape inside the classroom. 

Students were lined up in the hallway and given the rules before we entered the room to see the crime scene.  They were told as soon as they entered the room they were no longer sixth grade students, but now detectives.  They were given a fact sheet to fill in and it had a section where they were to fill in their theory.  They were told just to view the scene and not say a word, as well as record the clues they could find.  I played the Pink Panther music while they were examining the scene.

After about 7 minutes they were told they could compare notes with their colleagues.  After another 7 minutes we came together and analyzed each clue and came up with a whole class theory.

Once we discussed it at length, I told the "detectives" what really happened.
