Homework and Coding!

We coded today!  I had no idea how to use these programs but hey, this is the wave of the future!
We started out on code.org and from there chose our level (grade 6) and proceeded to choose one of a variety of coding activities.  Here are some shots of the kids coding.  I personally coded a minecraft game myself, and although I was super frustrated in the beginning, after about half an hour I started to get the hang of it!  The kids were light years ahead of me!  They did awesome!

In Literacy today we discussed non-fiction articles.  We read an article about a young man that represents the Refugee Olympic Team.  We talked about what and who refugees are, countries in refugee crisis and the reasons for this, all under the umbrella of finding the main idea, summarizing, and  synthesizing information.

Below are some photos of our Math activity with the learning goal:
Students demonstrate an understanding of how to multiply a decimal number by a whole number.

Spelling Story:
Here is an example of student work.  Students are required to use the spelling words they chose with their groups as they are defined in a piece of writing.  Here is one example of student work:

Spelling Week 2
Graduation Day

I woke up in the morning filled with happiness.  I was happy because it was graduation day.  I

worked very hard to get to this point and in my eyes I was a champion.  I was asked to speak in

front of the audience that was attending the ceremony.  This was a great gesture that was

given to me by my teacher.  At first I was nervous but became more comfortable as the days

went by.  I went downstairs and had my favorite bowl of  cereal and watched some sportsnet. I

sat there and could not believe that the day was finally here and I was finished grade school.

Where did all the years go?

My mother was very happy for me and wanted to help me write some creative words for my

speech.  She has always been helpful and provided me with lots of encouragement throughout

my life.  She was very proud of me when I received honorable mentions in math.  This was my

best subject and it was also my largest improvement in marks.  I wrote my speech and headed

out the door.  I looked down at my dog and asked him for forgiveness as I would not be able to

play with him because it was graduation day.

Math:
Using a wipe board and playing cards:
Make the largest number you can
Multiply it by 0.1, 0.01, 0.001
Record your answer
Check your work.
Repeat but this time make the smallest number you can.

Social Studies test tomorrow

Math Class in 6R

Today's concept was reviewing the multiplying and dividing of decimal numbers by 10, 100, 1000, 10 000.

We started out with using wipe boards and making numbers at the front of the room.  We had students physically go to the front and move the decimal in accordance with the question.

From there we worked on the educational website "Kahoot" and the students answered questions independently in game show format.

After that they answered questions in test form using google forms through their google classroom application.

Students used wipe boards while they answered the google forms test.

We had fun!
