Today we read the poem The Cremation of Sam McGee by Canadian poet Robert Service around the "campfire."  We turned off all of the lights and I placed a flashlight inside the "fire."  I read the poem with an ominous and mysterious tone aloud.  I had so much fun bringing one of my favourite literary works into the classroom.  Tonight the students are working on a response to the poem.

When we read the poem together originally, we went stanza by stanza and analyzed the meaning of each line so that the students would understand exactly what the poem meant before the dramatic reading.

Here are some photos.  One is of our homemade campfire, and there are a few of Capture the Flag in gym class.
